What are protection prayers?

OSRS has three combat styles: melee, ranged, and magic. Each has a dedicated overhead prayer that, when active, reduces damage you take from that style by 40% in PvP. These prayers appear as a glowing icon floating above your character's head — hence "overhead."

The three prayers are Protect from Melee (level 43), Protect from Missiles (level 40), and Protect from Magic (level 37).

The 40% rule — this is not PvM

The most important thing beginners get wrong: overhead prayers do not block 100% of damage from players the way they do against monsters. In PvP, they only reduce incoming damage by 40%. An opponent hitting a max of 60 still hits a 36 through your prayer. Overheads dramatically reduce damage, but you will still take hits — keep eating.

Common mistakes

Praying the wrong overhead. Running Protect from Melee while someone barrage-switches on you will cost you huge chunks of health fast. Always prioritise reading the style over anything else.

Forgetting to activate a prayer at all. In the chaos of a first fight it's easy to forget entirely. Make turning on your overhead the very first thing you do when combat starts.

Running out of prayer points. Pack enough super restores and track your doses. Dying because you ran dry is one of the most preventable deaths in PKing.

Panicking and only eating. When a big combo starts landing, the instinct is to spam food and freeze. Try to switch your prayer and eat at the same time — both matter.

The one thing to focus on first

Don't overwhelm yourself. Start by simply keeping the correct overhead active as consistently as you can. Watch the weapon your opponent holds, switch when it changes, and keep your prayer points stocked. That single habit will carry you through early fights. Everything else comes with time and repetition.

A common misconception about Protect from Magic

Many beginners assume that Protect from Magic also reduces the effectiveness of freeze spells — it doesn't. If an opponent casts Ice Barrage or Ice Burst on you, the prayer has no effect on whether the freeze lands or how long it holds you in place. You will still be frozen for the full duration regardless of your overhead. Protect from Magic only reduces the damage the spell deals by 40%. The freeze itself is completely unaffected. This catches a lot of new players off guard — they activate their overhead, get frozen, and assume something is broken. It isn't. Pray magic to survive the hits, but don't expect it to help you move any sooner.
